RESUMEN

The fish fauna of the Tocantins River possesses many endemic species; however, it is little studied in molecular terms and is quite threatened by the construction of several hydroelectric dams. Therefore, the objective of this study was to identify the ichthyofauna of the Tocantins River using DNA barcoding. For this, collections were carried out in five points of this river, which resulted in the capture of 725 individuals from which partial sequences of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene were obtained for genetic analysis. A total of 443 haplotypes were recovered with the mean intraspecific K2P genetic distance of 1.82%. Altogether, 138 species were identified based on morphological criteria, which was a quantity that was much lower than that indicated by the four molecular methods (assemble species by automatic partitioning [ASAP], barcode index number [BIN], generalized mixed Yule coalescent (GMYC), and Bayesian Poisson tree processes [bPTP]) through which 152-157 molecular entities were identified. In all, 41 unique BINs were obtained based on the data generated in the BOLDSystems platform. According to the result indicated by ASAP (species delimitation approach considered the most appropriate in the present study), there was an increase of 17 molecular entities (12.32%), when compared to the number of species identified through their morphological criteria, as it can show cryptic diversity, candidates for new species, and misidentifications. There were 21 incongruities indicated between the different identification approaches for species. Therefore, it is suggested that these taxonomic problems be cautiously evaluated by experts to solve such taxonomic issues.

RESUMEN

Pimelodus brevis Marini, Nichols & La Monte, 1933 was described from the río de la Plata, Departamento San Fernando, Argentina, based only on the holotype, which is missing since 1960s. This species has been cited in the literature and is considered valid despite of no voucher specimen has been found in museum. A taxonomic analysis comprising material from the rio Paraná basin provided additional specimens that made it possible to demonstrate the identity of P. brevis. Based on the original description and illustration of the holotype, we performed an allometric analysis and then we were able to compare the data with the similar sympatric congeners. Those comparisons allowed us to conclude that P. brevis is a junior synonym of P. argenteus Perugia, 1891, described from the río Paraná, Colonia Resistencia, Argentina. Comments on the status of congeners and taxonomic recommendations are provided.


Pimelodus brevis Marini, Nichols & La Monte, 1933 foi descrita do rio de la Plata, San Fernando, Argentina, com base apenas no holótipo, que está desaparecido desde a década de 1960. Esta espécie é considerada válida, a despeito da ausência de espécimes-testemunhos em coleções. Uma análise compreendendo material da bacia do rio Paraná forneceu espécimes adicionais, possibilitando reconhecer a identidade taxonômica de P. brevis. Com base na descrição original e na ilustração do holótipo, foi realizada uma análise alométrica e comparação dos dados com as congêneres simpátricas similares. Essas comparações permitiram concluir que P. brevis é sinônimo júnior de P. argenteus Perugia, 1891, descrita do rio Paraná, Colonia Resistencia (atual Departamento San Fernando), Argentina. Comentários sobre o status de congêneres e recomendações taxonômicas são fornecidas.

RESUMEN

A new species of Scoloplax is described from small tributaries of rio Aripuanã, rio Madeira drainage, Amazonas State, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by several morphological features, such as ventral midline plates with two longitudinal parallel rows of odontodes not covered by skin, pectoral and pelvic fins with all rays simple, unbranched, and mesethmoid with a thickened triangular anterior process. Implications of new records of S. dolicholophia from rio Japurá and other comparative features within the genus are discussed.


Uma nova espécie de Scoloplax é descrita para pequenos tributários do rio Aripuanã, drenagem do rio Madeira, estado do Amazonas, Brasil. A nova espécie pode ser diferenciada das demais espécies do gênero por vários aspectos morfológicos, tais como placas ventrais da linha média apresentando duas fileiras paralelas de odontódeos não cobertos por pele, nadadeiras peitoral e pélvica com todos os raios simples, não ramificados, e mesetmóide com um espessamento no processo anterior. Implicações dos novos registros de S. dolicholophia do rio Japurá e outros aspectos comparativos do gênero são discutidos.

RESUMEN

A new species of Gladioglanis is described from a single locality on rio Aripuanã, rio Madeira basin, and can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: dorsal-fin spine and spinelet absent, first dorsal-fin ray flexible, unbranched, followed by five branched dorsal-fin rays, pectoral-fin spine short and with few (5 anterior-side, 4 posterior-side) dentations, 22-25 anal-fin rays, round profile of the head in dorsal view, first dorsal-fin pterygiophore in contact with the neural spine of eighth vertebrae, 13 caudal-fin rays in both upper and lower lobes, and 60 total vertebrae. Some of its characters are discussed below and compared among the species of a small clade within Heptapteridae proposed by Bockmann (1998).


Uma nova espécie de Gladioglanis é descrita de uma única localidade no rio Aripuanã, bacia do rio Madeira, e pode ser diferenciada de seus congêneres pelos seguintes caracteres: espinho dorsal e trava do espinho ausentes, primeiro raio da dorsal simples, flexível, seguido de cinco raios ramificados na nadadeira dorsal, espinho peitoral menor e com poucas (5 anteriores e 4 posteriores) serras, 22-25 raios na nadadeira anal, perfil da cabeça arredondado em vista dorsal, primeiro pterigióforo da nadadeira dorsal em contato com o espinho neural da oitava vértebra, 13 raios na nadadeira caudal em ambos lobos superior e inferior, e 60 vértebras. Alguns dos caracteres são discutidos e comparados entre as espécies de um pequeno clado dentro de Heptapteridae proposto por Bockmann (1998).
